Tetracaine HCl blocks voltage-sensitive release of Ca2+ from sarcoplasmic reticulum. Tetracaine hydrochloride is also an inhibitor of Na+ CP type X α and Na+ CP type IV α. Tetracaine is a local anesthetic used to numb the eyes, nose, or throat. It may also be used before starting an intravenous to decrease pain from the procedure.
